Reflections:
What went well during your online microteaching lesson?
My use of visual aids was well-received. Visual aids are a powerful tool in teaching, as they help to clarify complex concepts, keep students engaged, and cater to different learning styles. My positive feedback indicates that my visual aids were not only effective but also appealing to my learners. This suggests that I put careful thought into selecting or creating visuals that complemented my lesson content. The incorporation of a Kahoot game was a hit, offering an interactive element that actively involved my learners. Kahoot is an excellent platform for reinforcing learning in a fun and competitive way. My peers feedback appreciated that the game allowed them to take control of their learning experience by answering questions at their own pace. This approach can foster a sense of autonomy and confidence among students, as they feel more in charge of their learning process. The fact that the Kahoot game went as planned is another testament to my effective lesson planning. My learners were able to answer all the questions correctly and within the allotted time, which shows that the content was well-matched to their abilities and that the questions were appropriately challenging. Their ability to answer quickly, sometimes even before I finished reading the options, indicates that they were highly engaged and understood the material well. Moreover, the learners' excitement and enthusiasm throughout the lesson, evidenced by their giggles and quick responses, suggests that the environment I created was both enjoyable and conducive to learning. When students are excited and having fun, they are more likely to retain information and participate actively, making my lesson not just educational, but memorable.
What challenges or obstacles did you encounter, and how dud you address them?
During my lesson, I encountered a couple of minor challenges. The most notable issue occurred when I accidentally exited the Blackboard meeting instead of the Kahoot game, which temporarily interrupted the session. This mistake caused me to leave the lesson momentarily, but I quickly rejoined and immediately explained the situation to the learners. I apologized for the disruption, which helped to quickly restore the lesson’s flow and maintain the students’ focus. Another point raised by my peers was related to the vocabulary I used during the lesson. Specifically, I included terms like "vast," which might be too complex for Grade 3 students. While these words are valuable in expanding students' vocabularies, they may not be appropriate for this age group, as some students might struggle to fully grasp their meanings. Moving forward, I will make a conscious effort to use more age-appropriate and child-friendly language. This adjustment will help ensure that all learners can easily understand the material, stay engaged, and feel more confident in their ability to participate in the lesson. By refining my vocabulary, I aim to make my lessons more accessible and enjoyable for young learners.
Did your lesson meet the learning objectives you set out to achieve?
Yes, my lesson effectively met the learning objectives. By the end, all of the learners had gained a deeper understanding of astronauts and space exploration. I achieved this by incorporating interactive activities, such as the Kahoot game, which kept the learners engaged and reinforced key concepts. Additionally, I used multimedia elements like visual aids to enhance their comprehension and make the topic more tangible. The lesson also introduced new vocabulary related to space, helping students expand their language skills while learning about the subject. Overall, the lesson was both informative and engaging, ensuring that the objectives were met.
Did you choose appropriate ICT tools to teach your online lesson, explain why?
Yes, I chose appropriate ICT tools that greatly enhanced the effectiveness of my lesson. The PowerPoint slides played a key role in delivering the content. They provided clear and organized visual aids that complemented the material, making it easier for the learners to follow along. By having the information presented visually, the students could read along with me, which helped reinforce their understanding of the key concepts. The slides were structured in a way that allowed the learners to absorb the information step by step, ensuring that they could fully grasp the content. The Kahoot game was another strategic choice that added an interactive element to the lesson. Before starting the game, I took the time to explain to the learners how to access Kahoot, enter their names, and navigate the questions. This preparation ensured that everyone was on the same page and ready to participate. The game itself went exactly as planned, with all the learners answering the questions correctly, indicating that they had understood the material. The students' reactions during the Kahoot game—such as laughter, applause, and enthusiastic participation—showed that they were not only engaged but also enjoying the process. This interactive approach kept their attention and made the learning experience more enjoyable. By turning the review of the content into a fun competition, I was able to reinforce the lesson in a way that was both educational and entertaining. In summary, the combination of PowerPoint slides and the Kahoot game provided a well-rounded approach to teaching. The slides offered visual clarity, while the Kahoot game added interactivity and excitement. These tools were perfectly suited to the lesson, helping to engage the learners and ensure that they retained the information effectively.
What did you learn from this experience that you can apply to the teaching of this lesson in the classroom?
Based on the feedback from my peers, I recognize the need to incorporate more child-friendly vocabulary in my PowerPoint slides. While my initial intention was to introduce a wider range of vocabulary to help children expand their language skills, I now realize that this approach may have been too challenging for the learners. By using more complex words, I may have inadvertently made it harder for some students to fully grasp the material. To address this, I will revise my slides to ensure that the language used is more accessible and appropriate for the age group. This adjustment will help make the content easier for the students to understand, allowing them to engage more effectively with the lesson. My goal is still to enrich their vocabulary, but I will do so in a way that aligns with their current language development, gradually introducing new terms without overwhelming them. By updating my content with more suitable vocabulary, I aim to strike a better balance between challenging the learners and ensuring they feel confident and capable in their understanding.
How did you incorporate feedback from peers, mentors, or students into your lesson improvement process?
I carefully reviewed the feedback provided by my peers on Padlet and took their suggestions to heart. The primary feedback focused on my use of vocabulary that needed to be more child-friendly. Recognizing the importance of this input, I have integrated it into my lesson improvement process. I understand that using vocabulary that is appropriate for the age group is crucial for ensuring that students can engage with and comprehend the material effectively. Therefore, I have made a concerted effort to revise my lesson plans to include language that is more accessible to young learners. This means simplifying complex terms and choosing words that are more familiar and understandable for the children. By incorporating this feedback, I aim to enhance the clarity of my lessons and make the content more engaging and manageable for my students. This adjustment will help create a more supportive learning environment where students can better absorb the material and build their language skills at an appropriate pace.
